  • Abandoned Berlin

Abandoned Berlin promises "tall tales of trespass and anecdotes of fear." It's an attempt to remember the past through the present, to capture memories in the air, to uncover the stories trapped in broken bricks and flaking paint. Unfortunately, it involves a bit of trespassing. The project started in 2009 when the lure of untold wonders was calling from the other side of a threatening fence outside an abandoned amusement park. It was such a magical experience the author was compelled to share it with instructions for others to enjoy it as well. One story led to another and so it became a documentation project to record the city’s ruins and derelict places before they’re gone. It has since spawned two books, documentaries, a growing number of short films, t-shirts, and many imposters. The motto remains the same – "If it’s verboten it’s got to be fun."

  • Mare Memoria Viva

    Mare Memoria Viva

According to anthropologist Ruth Van Dyke, place might be defined as the <<intersection of memory and landscape>>.

The Ecomuseo Urbano Mare Memoria Viva acts in the furrow of this intersection, investigating the transformative power of memory and the process of construction of a new identity of Palermo coastline: a 'difficult heritage', radically transformed by massive dumping of debris during the so-called Sack of Palermo, raising issues such as collective responsibility, corruption and collusion with the mafia, unauthorized building and abandonment.

The Ecomuseum’s mission is what we call ‘human’ regeneration: building new bonds between people and places, based on community making and shared actions and values.

A city is made by citizens and the crucial precondition for a real regeneration process consists in taking care of a place and activating a transformative thinking in its inhabitants.

That’s what we summarize in the ideas of ‘urban awareness’ and ‘right to the horizon’.

  • Università degli Studi di Napoli "Federico II"

I am completing my studies in the Master's degree course in "Social Innovation" at the Federico II University of Naples. I am writing my thesis on the area of Piazza Garibaldi in Naples, focusing on the living practices of the migrant communities settled in the square. The interpretative keys I use are: urban commons, informal economy and innovative urban practices. My approach at the moment is qualitative and ethnographic. Currently I also collaborate with "Sottospazio", a collective engaged in the active observation of the contemporary dynamics of the city and landscape through itinerant research-action laboratories involving the local population.
